The Seven Hermetic Principles Are Not Ancient History. They Are Your Operating Manual.
What are the actual mechanics of consciousness, reality, and change? The Hermetic principles are the closest thing I've found to a complete answer. And I've spent decades looking.

Somewhere around 3 a.m., when the house is quiet and the noise of the day has finally cleared, most people who've been doing serious inner work find themselves circling the same question: how does this actually work? Not philosophically. Practically. What are the actual mechanics of consciousness, reality, and change?
The Hermetic principles are the closest thing I've found to a complete answer. And I've spent decades looking.
These seven principles, codified in a text called The Kybalion and attributed to the ancient tradition of Hermes Trismegistus, are not religious doctrine. They are not metaphorical poetry. They are a description of how reality operates at every scale, from the movement of galaxies down to the quality of your Tuesday afternoon. Once you understand them and, more importantly, once you start working with them, things in your life begin to shift in ways that previously felt out of reach.
Why Most People Miss What These Principles Are Actually For
The Hermetic principles have been available in print for over a century, since The Kybalion was published in 1908. Millions of people have read them. Far fewer have used them. The gap between knowing and using is where most people get stuck.
The reason, I think, is that most presentations of these principles stop at explanation. They tell you what the principles are without showing you how to work with them in the texture of daily experience. So, they become interesting ideas rather than living tools. Interesting ideas don't change your life.
Let's not make that mistake here. For each principle, here's what it is, why it matters, and what it looks like to work with it.
Mentalism: Everything Begins in Mind
"The All is Mind. The Universe is Mental." This is the first and foundational Hermetic principle, and it is the one that modern physics keeps arriving at from unexpected directions.
Quantum physicists have observed, repeatedly and uncomfortably, that the act of observation appears to influence the behavior of subatomic particles. The observer and the observed are not cleanly separate. Consciousness is not sitting outside reality looking in. It is woven into the fabric of what reality is.
This isn't wishful thinking. It's the subject of serious research in quantum mechanics, quantum biology, and consciousness studies. What Hermes understood millennia ago, physics is now struggling to articulate in the language of mathematics.
In practical terms: your thoughts are not descriptions of a fixed reality. They are participants in the creation of your experienced reality. The quality of your inner life shapes what you can perceive, what you attract, and what becomes possible for you. Change the mind, and the world you inhabit begins to change with it.
Correspondence: As Within, So Without
"As above, so below. As within, so without." The same patterns that govern galaxies govern atoms. The same dynamics operating in your inner life are reflected in your external circumstances.
This principle is not a poetic metaphor. It is a description of fractal reality. The chaos you experience in your relationships often corresponds to something unresolved internally. The abundance or scarcity you experience externally tends to reflect your deep, often unconscious beliefs about what you deserve and what is possible.
Working with correspondence means stopping the habit of treating your inner world and outer world as separate problems. They aren't. They are the same process viewed from different angles.
Vibration: Nothing Is at Rest
Everything in the universe is in constant motion. Matter, energy, thought, emotion; all of it vibrating at frequencies that can be higher or lower, more or less coherent. Modern physics has confirmed this at the level of subatomic particles. The quantum vacuum, far from being empty, is a sea of fluctuating energy.
Your emotional states have vibrational qualities that are not purely metaphorical. Research in heart coherence by the HeartMath Institute demonstrates that emotional states produce measurable electromagnetic fields that extend beyond the body and influence those nearby. Fear and resentment produce one kind of field. Love and gratitude produce another.
You can work with your vibration consciously. Meditation, shadow work, time in nature, genuine connection. These are vibration management practices, not luxury add-ons to a spiritual life.
Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, Gender
The remaining four principles complete the framework. Polarity teaches that opposites are the same thing at different degrees. Courage and fear are on the same pole, and you move from one to the other not by eliminating the fear but by raising the energy on the same continuum. Rhythm tells you that everything cycles, that the fallow periods in your life are not failures but necessary pendulum swings gathering momentum for the upswing. Cause and Effect strip the notion of luck from your worldview and gives you something better: the understanding that you can become a cause rather than an effect.
And the Principle of Gender, probably the most misunderstood of the seven, teaches that creation always requires two complementary forces: the directed, focused masculine principle and the receptive, fertile feminine principle. Both exist within every human being. Every creative act in your life requires both. Most people are dramatically overweighted toward one or the other. The work of integration is largely the work of bringing them into balance.
These Are Not Ideas. They Are Instructions.
The Hermetic tradition didn't preserve these principles for two thousand years because they made for interesting reading. They survived because they worked. Generation after generation of practitioners in alchemy, Kabbalah, Hermeticism, and related traditions found that working with these laws produced results that no other framework could explain.
You don't need to accept that on faith. You can test every one of these principles in your own experience starting today. Notice the correspondence between your inner state and your outer circumstances. Work consciously with your vibrational state for one week and observe what shifts. Stop treating a stuck emotion as something to eliminate and try moving it up the same pole instead.
The Great Work is built on foundations like these. Not as abstract philosophy but as living practice. You've been navigating these principles without the language for them your entire life. Now you have the language.
Welcome to The Great Work. May you achieve all the abundance and joy you desire.
